How do I get my girls to listen?

I have a great u12 team and they play very good, but I would like them to learn more when I train them, but can't seem to get them to settle down and listen? any suggestions?

its great you have such an awesome team, so you want them to listen?  lol  always a tough one, and many here will have lots of great ideas.  it all depends on your coaching style.  me im a very tough coach, and run my teams like boot camp (so i am told).  when my team doesnt listen to me, i stop talking and when they notice i have stopped they go for a run, or do burpees, or pushups. i keep doing this until they have learnt to just listen.  i also though coach netsetgo and have the 4-5yr old group, so this approach obviously wouldnt work, but they all listen and do exactly what they are told, as i try and keep their drills very short and active, and have no one standing still for long.  thats when i find they will get distracted.  so maybe keep your team constantly moving, your instructions short and to the point, and do something fun when they are doing the right thing, and when they dont, come up with something not so fun to do.  but be consistant and fair.  if you make a rule, stick to it.

hope this helps.

I have had the same problem with my U17 team, most of whom are 13 and 14 year olds, they constantly use to chat when I'm talking, so now, if one chats the whole team has to drop and do 10 push ups, this has made the whole team responsible for each other (team work) and it has worked a charm. Last week was the most attentive training session I've had this season..like your own children, they need consequences for their actions (whether good or bad) so praise up large the good stuff, make rules for the not so good and stick to them..

Same problem with my u17 team a minority of the team insist in using practices as gossip time.Although their is always aspecific one who is the instigator if you have never coached b4 can be pritty intimidating.

I had the same issue with my Y6s here in NZ,

my husband (Head of Sport at a High School) came in a helped me with this, he applied a really simple technique, once they have finished a drill you make them sit down, fold their arms and legs, first one to do so gets a point, each time he ran a drill he did the the same thing, at the end of training all the girls were comparing how many points they had, made it completive within the team and made them really listen to what they were asked to do so they could have a better chance of finishing first.

At the start of the next training the girl with the most points got to choose a warm up drill.
