Hi, has anyone got any good drills for ensuring players keep watching the ball at all times?

Hi, has anyone got any good drills for ensuring players keep watching the ball?! the defense have worked a lot on their marking, body postions/footwork etc but often when the ball is inside the circle they are so busy watching their player their heads drop slightly and they forget about the ball!! i've tried periphiral vision drill on here but doesnt seem to be sinking in in matches esp if against quick shooters! any tips would be great! :)

Hi there,

i do a drill with my girls that enhances peripheral vision. using the D one girl stands under the ring facing the court three girls stand directly in front on the edge of the D the middle girl stays where she and never moves and the girl under the ring can only look at her. the two girls beside the centre girl on the D will be moving , one will be the feeder with the ball the other will hold 3 coloured witches hats behind her back. At the same time the feeder will throw the ball to the girl all the time she is only to look at the centre girl and at the same time the girl holding the hats will bring one colour out to her side the girl under the ring will have to yell out the colour while catching and throwing the ball back, all the time looking at the girl in the centre the two girls on the D wil take one step along the D in the oposite way repeating it until the reach the end then come back, i then swap the girls so they all get a turn. my girls love it and it has helped them see space, their apponiants and the ball all at the same time in their game.

hope this helps

Hi again there is a drill on this website that is great i adapted it to my girls its called 'getting free'. The heading says 'player 2 holds space (screening) facing X'. i attached it below.

what happens is the girl on the outer D will only yell out to the team mate in the D who is defending, only when they are directly in line with a clear shot and the defender turns to the voice catching the ball.

This can also work when the oposition has the ball on the outer D trying to pass to a team mate, have your girls learn to antisipate their oponant at who in the D they are going to trow to, at that moment yell your team mates name who is defending that girl so she can turn and intercept the ball, it takes a bit of work but i found our turn arounds, have doubled.

hope this helps. Sally-Anne

Screening to keep the space

Description:

Player 2 holds space (screening) facing X, either infront or to the side. Player 2 turns to receive the ball from player 1 on signal.

Could work this in the circle so the worker receives the ball, turns and shoots.

Coaching Points:
  • The feed must be appropiate and fed into space
