My shooters tend to bunch up in the goal area or pass 5-10 times around the goal area to get closer to the goals without success. Do you have any ideas on how to better use footwork in the goal area?
have you looked at the "in pairs shooting" drill? i used this with my U11 team shooters and it helped a lot. also teach split landings, concentrating on a balanced and even weighted landing for both feet. its very common for them to not landing on both feet, and therefore step. remember to develop this skill and not just chuck them into the split, as it isnt easy to learn for some.
Thanks Lee-Anne. I will check out the drill you recommended. Some of my shooters use the split effectively, but others are still working on it.
the other technique i used last night with them, was to flood the goal circle with defence. i started with one on one shooter defence combo and everyone else around the edge of the circle. then added my other shooter so it was 2 shooters on one defence, and everyone else around the edge for support to the shooters. then one by one i added someone in as defence until i had 4 defence on 2 shooters, and only 2 supports on the outside of the circle. it made the shooters really work the circle, keep moving about, feeling the kaos and confusion around the defence, but they were still getting the ball (and that does prob say something about some of my players defence skills...lol) but it was a lot of hard work for them. then i removed all but my 2 usual defenders, and the shooters found it a lot easier then to move around the circle.
in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
