Iâm looking for a drill for my gk to help defend a holding gs. Iâve encouraged the gk to keep moving around the gs to limit passing options into the gs but need a drill
Hi Clare,
The advice you have given your GK regarding moving around the shooter is perfect! This will prevent the shooter from being able to set up a strong hold and will also deter the centre court from passing in.
I have attached below the correct technique to deal with a holding shooter, found in our fundamentals section, however it seems you have this nailed already.
Below are a few drills that may help you:
- 1-v-2 Guarding Ball Side
- 1-vs-1 Defending in the Circle
- Front Marking with Ball
These are only a few drills that you can use, however the most important aspects for your GK to remember is just to keep their foot base narrow so they can move around the shooter quickly. Also, ensure the GK does not cause contact but set up early as they see the ball coming through court.
Hope this helps.

Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
