Ive got 2 girls that have never played before and they keep driving to catch the ball into the thrower's space, i've tried to tell them to move out the space and even spent a whole training session teaching the team how to use space on the court but they still keep trying to catch the ball next to or just in front of the player, does anyone know any drills that encourage driving away from the ball and down the court away from the thrower?
it depends on their age. if they are only in netta type age group then its a longer process. but you can just keep practising drills of running away and coming forward and make it a rule for your team you must be x metres from the person throwing the ball. If they are older and playing in a graded comp then teach some set plays so they can see what their job is. you still might have to put in that rule of you must be x metres away from the person passing at all times until they get the concept. you could also put the person who is passing the ball in the goal circle say, and everyone else could be running around the goal third. they must pass to the person in the goal ring but not go in and then pass back. that gives them a visional line of where they can`t go in. once they get that then take it out into the centre third and say the same thing but have cones representing the area that they aren`t to go in. then take the cones away and repeat and see if that has solved your problem.
let me know if you need any other ideas.
