GS strategy to just stand by the post

GS strategy to just stand by the post

Hi, my daughter is tall and plays GS. Her current coach keeps telling her to hold her position to stay by the post and not lead out. She is frustrated at this strategy as she feels she is not improving. What are your thoughts? Thanks

Hi Helen,

I am not surprised your daughter`s coach has asked her to hold her space under the post if she is tall. This is a classic, and often successful, way of getting the ball into the circle and is a key skill for any tall shooter. However, I do also understand your daughter`s frustration and concerns regarding this strategy as it can be very repetitious constantly working on the same skill.

Personally, I would advise your daughter speaking to the coach and explaining how she understands how this strategy is effective and beneficial team but she would also like to try adding some movement within the circle. For example, if your daughter is confident playing GA she can ask to switch out to GA sometimes. It is important your daughter does not aimlessly do as the coach says without expressing her concerns as this will ultimately make her further frustrated and possibly lead to her losing the love for the sport. Open channels of communications are incredibly important and I am sure the coach will accommodate her suggestions.

Hope this helps.
