Hi Shelly,

Welcome back to netball! As a Goal Keeper (GK) marking a Goal Shooter (GS), your primary role is to prevent the GS from scoring. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  1. Positioning: Always stay between the GS and the goal post. This positioning helps you to block shots and intercept passes.
  2. Distance: Maintain a distance of at least 1 meter (3 feet) from the GS when they have the ball to avoid obstruction penalties .
  3. Defending the Shot: When the GS is taking a shot, you can jump to intercept the ball as long as you maintain the 1-meter distance. Use your arms to block the shot, but ensure you do not make contact with the GS .
  4. Rebounds: After a shot, be ready to box out the GS and go for the rebound if the shot is missed. This is crucial to regain possession for your team .
  5. Interceptions: Try to anticipate the passes to the GS and go for interceptions. Timing is key here, so practice reading the play and reacting quickly .

For more detailed drills and practices to improve your GK skills, you can check out the "GK Interceptions" drill in the drill library 1 here .

Good luck, and enjoy your time back on the court!

Best, Cam
