My girls are doing exceptionally well in their grade and i am very proud, however i am wondering if i should work on fitness with them or not? Help?
By teaching them the basic netball skills e.g. footwork, catching, changing direction, jumping, distance, defending, shooting, you will be working on fitness and agility without even trying. In my opinion at this age it very important for players to have fun while learning netball skills and leave the focus on fitness for older age groups.
Totally agree :-) thanks Janet
So do they train at all? I'm not sure from your question whether they are already training but you want to know whether to work on fitness or not training at all.
I think training is important so that the team gets together outside of game times to work on anything that comes up in the previous game, talk about their upcoming game and to also work on their skills. Repitition of the basic skills is really important and players no matter what level they play still do this.
If the girls are unfit (which it doesn't sound like they are) an hour or so a week isn't enough to get their fitness up - they need to be working on this themselves.
I usually do a mix of warm-up, drills and court time which also works on their fitness at the same time. I also work on things that may not have worked well their last game - back-line pass etc.
Good luck with your girls, it sounds like they are doing very well :)
in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
