Hi, My two team of girls are having a great season and will be heading into finals in 6 rounds, as a coach this is first time i have coached finals. My question is about positions and subs, do you play fair all over for the whole game or do you put your best team on court for most of the game, playing those that don't fit into the best line up on for minimum time - like the first quarter?i have one team of 8 (Age group Under 19's) , and one team of 9 Seniors (A2) which i play/coach in? Any tips would be helpful.
Definately start your best 7 and see how that first quarter goes. You should let the girls no before hand that they might not get a game. BUT if you can give all of them game time then that would be awesome. In all my finals, I gave my girls game time because they all deserved it. If it is real close game and you have a good flow on don`t change it.
I tend to put my best players on in Q1 and Q3. If the scores are close at the end of Q3, I keep the best players on as much as I can. Having said that we do have a rotation schedule which we keep to as best we can.
Finals are what you work all season. So I always review previous games match ups. What players were most effective. Talk to team and ask them do they want the win in finals. Then it`s best match up players against the opposition team. Some players may not take the court because the team wants the win. Everyone knows their is no I in team. If you have for example players of the same standard for example 2 Centres and the opposition only has 1 centre it`s a great advantage at at 3rd qrt put your 2nd Center on for 3 & 4 qrt. Fresh legs can really impact the game. Good luck
