Does anyone know a drill which will help to improve your balance when defending the shot?
its all about core strength and focus. i tend to have most of my weight on the front foot standing side on to the shooter, and use my other foot to just touch the ground as my balance stretching the arm up nearest the shooter to get over the ball, and the other hand straight up in the air, helping keeping my center straight up and down not leant. you can also use the other defence player to hold the other defence for even more stability. any balance drills for standing on one leg while someone moves a ball in front of them is good. strengthening the core with plank, burpies is also good. hope that helps.
I don't know of any drills as such but it is a practiced skill to learn where your centre of balance is and extending it to achieve greater reach. I found it helped me to visualise keeping my feet on the ground at the same time as stretching up from the waist which helped stop overbalancing. Good core strength and flexible torso also help but the balance is very much a mental body awareness thing. Once you can get a good stretch and keep balance statically on two feet extend to following a moving target and then on to one foot.
