Defender falling in on the shooter

Defender falling in on the shooter

If the defender falls in while defending the shooter, is that obstruction? If they fall in and duck down they are still moving into the 3ft zone....

Hi Michele,

The obstruction rule is all about "interference with the shot (or pass)" from within 3ft. So if a defender falls in but gets their hand out of the way quickly such that it doesn`t interfere with the shot then they often won`t be called. We actually teach this to defenders about balancing and trying to hold their position for nearly the three seconds, allowing themselves to fall in at the same time as getting hands down and turning the body to be able to block for the rebound.

Hope that helps,

Simon
