Im currently coaching 10 - 12 yr old girls, I need some tips on how to keep them focused on the game (stop daydreaming). They seem to "daydream" or their eyes wander when they have thrown the ball and its no longer down their end.
you need to get them to think of the ball as something they want. What concept will make them think about the ball more than anything else. Some people just use visualisation methods...think of the ball as if it was worth $1000, or an iphone, or your favourite pet and you need to make sure you watch it to keep it safe and be there to catch it.
others use a form of disipline to motivate the kids to stay focused. If your player is more than X away from you the team will do burpees (or whatever you come up with) or if you miss a pass, ect..no one likes to be responsible for making their team do burpees or suicide.
or try positive reinforcement...when you stay focussed on the game or drill and put lots of energy into the game, then we will play your fav game for Xmins at the end of the session or next training session.
they are the most common ways people get their players to focus.
the reason though why they arent focused could be varied. they are bored (as they dont like the position, and the ball is never down their end), they are not confident and its easier to stay away from the play than to make a mess of it, they didnt want to play netball in the first place but mum insists, that is just part of their personality. addressing the reason why is another if its more to do with one child, addressing it as a team would be in the top 3 options.

Thanks Lee -anne!
I have used that method (pretending the ball is worth its weight in gold) to get them to chase the ball and to keep it in their possesion and its worked, i dont know why i didnt think of doing that with the Day dreaming. Im not keen on punishing the whole group for one persons mistake, unless a few of them do it.
Thankyou :)
in more ways than one
No more 50/50 toss-ups. When simultaneous infringements occur, possession now goes to the team that last had the ball. Here's what it means for your coaching.
Train your defenders to win clean turnovers, not just disrupt. The difference between good defenders and great ones is taking the ball, not just touching it.
Netball is experiencing unprecedented growth, with record viewership, evolving rules, and professional leagues expanding worldwide. Here's what 2026 brings for our sport.
