Coaching a grand final

Coaching a grand final

The girls I coach have just made it into their first grand final against a top-of-the-ladder, undefeated team. I know they have the skills to beat them, but I'm scared that the pressure will get to them, especially since they've never played a granny before. what do I do/say before the game to get them in the right headspace to play?

Hi Penny,

It's fantastic that your team has made it to the grand final! Here are some tips to help your players get into the right headspace:

  1. Focus on Strengths: Remind them of their strengths and how they got to this point. Reinforce their skills and teamwork.
  2. Visualize Success: Encourage them to visualize themselves playing well and succeeding. Visualization can boost confidence and reduce anxiety.
  3. Stay Present: Emphasize the importance of staying in the moment. Encourage them to focus on each play rather than the outcome of the game.
  4. Team Unity: Foster a sense of unity and support. Remind them that they are in this together and to support each other on and off the court.
  5. Positive Reinforcement: Use positive language and reinforce their capabilities. Highlight past successes against tough opponents.
  6. Relaxation Techniques: Teach them simple breathing exercises to calm nerves before the game.

Lastly, remind them to enjoy the experience. It's a significant achievement to reach the finals, and playing with joy can often lead to the best performances.

Good luck!
