Any tips for a team of under 8s that have never played netball before?
Start with basics, encourage proper techniques from the get go and don`t move on to harder stuff until they have the techniques properally. I have found doing this the girls learn a lot quicker and I don`t spend much time correcting it later, the girls progress a lot faster and often like winning against their opponents so will keep training well. Also play games for warm ups and cool downs that mimic movements on the court eg. Stuck in the mud for footwork, tag for hip movement, river bank (my team loves) is great for footwork as well. Games also works for girls who get distracted easily, I often have to say `If you do your drills properally now you can choose the game we play later` - then they focus and often perform better. Encourage them to work as a team as well as the parents as this will make your life a lot easier, and teach them that GK goes with GS, GD with GA ect as soon as possible as this makes games a lot easier to manage and crowding doesn`t get too bad. Enjoy the year with your team!
