Coaches talk/speech at the breaks. I am contious of not saying the same things all the time. "watch the passes....dont step...watch your player" You cannot be "deep and meaningful" to the girls. Any thoughts? I know comments should be specific about the the game but at times i get lost in the match supporting and not analysising. If am about to tell a girl off I use the "sandwich techique" two pieces of bread and the meat in the middle - that being a "good" 1st and the bad thing to improve on and then finish with a good comment. The bad thing she did is the meat and the real meesage.
Phil, I think it depends quite a lot on the age of the players. The younger they are the more important it is to stay focussed on encouragement and positive commentary - although I think this is generally useful for all ages. It is too late during the game to be trying to instruct or teach anything new so it is best to relate comments to previous training sessions/drills/set plays that you want them to apply in the game. The more specific you can be as to what you want players to do, the better. For younger players, I think it is important to focus on their own play, while with adolescent players the focus can include how you want them to respond to their opponents' style of play. Good luck!
