what are some ways to help 14 year old girls who are quite advanced in netball, with boxing out and rebounding in the goal circle (as goal defence and goal keep)
Asked using Sportplan on Mobile
get them in a good balanced defence position for defending the shot. ie stretched up and leaning in. as soon as they fall in, or just as the shooter releases the shot, then get them to step in (arms down) turn their back to the player, and get into a rebound position (knees lightly bent, arms ready to reach up for the ball, looking up towards the goal ring so they can work out where the ball is going to come down). that way you have blocked the shooter from moving forward, for them to contest the rebound they will have to jump over you more, and you are in perfect ready position to get the rebound.
We also coach our defenders in the way Lee-anne has described except that the either the shot must be released or the blocking defender must not be interfering with the shot in any way by shortening their distance e.g there must be enough room for the shooting action and no intimidation of the goalie. You can practice this in training with defenders working at protecting their space under the goals while keeping eyes up for the rebound. Once they learn the routine insist they use it for 100% of shots.
