I have one player who throws the ball away to the opposition every time she gets the ball. How can I help this child?
generally players do this when they rush their pass, or they dont time their passes correctly.
why dont you play a game at training, where there are more defenders than attack. make sure the attacks are clearly recognisable, and your defenders are told to start off with only putting in a half an effort of defence (ie run with their players but make no attempt to get the intercept). remind your player that she has 3 seconds to pass, and she doesnt have to just chuck the ball away to get rid of it. that she has to look for the best option. your other players can use the time as getting in front or away from their opponents.
once she is passing better to an easily defended player, then get the defence to increase their intensity.
make sure that your attackers are not breaking too early to shut down their options, and that they are calling clearly for the ball, using good preliminary moves to get clear of their opponents, and that they arent all running towards her at once. just one good clear break at a time, then a back up if needed.
hope she improves.
Go back to the school yard - KEEP AWAY! KEEEP AWAY!!
Start with a 2 small groups and choose 2 girls to 'Keep the ball' away from.
It brings in laughter, concerntration and you can build up from it aswell.
in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
