I coach a group of Y5/6 primary girls and think they're ready but there's some debate in my netball community about whether it's acceptable or not
Personally, I don't think there is any harm in trying it. If you feel it's not right for them and they don't understand it, you can leave it until they are older. I don't think there is any set age. Some girls do it instinctively, anyway.
I agree with Laura, as long as the girls are clear that they are defending a space, they are anticipating the players movement. They are not blocking or deliberately causing contact. Sometimes youngster are mistaken in their objective and step up/into their player which does cause problems at that age. But spatial awareness and game anticipation are skills that they need for all team sports (and individual sports as well, especially racket sports!) and will be a great base for future development.
most girls that age dont like the close contact, and arent ready for the physical side of netball, and more so their opponents wont know what to do and will more than likely react by pushing past them. although teaching them the skills is always good, some may not be ready for the physical side. so be careful, as it may cause injuries or at least put some players off. others however will thrive.
in more ways than one
The Wing Attack is the critical link between midcourt possession and circle feeding. This masterclass breaks down the movement patterns, timing, and spatial awareness that separate elite WAs from the rest, with practical drills to develop these skills at every level.
Footwork is the foundation of every skill in netball. This guide provides a clear explanation of the stepping rule, the mechanics of one-foot and two-foot landings, pivoting technique, and progressive drills to build footwork confidence from junior level upward.
The early 'shoot from anywhere' era is over. Smart teams now use data-driven decision models to decide when the two-pointer is worth it.
