We currently use standard plays, but looking for different movements to make when a centre pass has been made.
there are always "trick" plays, but it depends on your players age and ability. but to be honest most players dont even think about "set" plays when they are playing, they just do what works for them at the time. set plays are great to give new players an idea on how to link passes, and roughly where they should be running, but teaching your players to run into space, cutting across court, keeping space open, backfilling are good skills so that they will just fall into a natural passing sequence to the player that is open.
but remind your players that the GD and WD are options for a center break too if you want to come up with changing it up a bit.
probably the best idea would be to have them set up for half court and if you have any spare players laying around then put in a GD and WD on the other transverse line. stop them every time they get cluttered or a pass goes astray or intercepted (have the defence go out of ear shot) and get them to think about who should go where, then replay that exact sequence, and see if you can get them thinking more when they are playing. you will have to ask the defence to back off a little on their defence so to get the benefit of the exercise, or they will just know what is going on and intercept.
in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
