How to approach training after a bad loss due to poor shot conversion?

How do I approach a training after a bad loss due to shots? They are 10 year olds and the team played well but due to only 20% of goals going through the hoop the score didn't reflect the closeness of the game. Ta.

As a coach you need to be asking yourself, were the shooters just having a bad day, or is this a reflection of their current ability?  if its a bad day, then we all have them.  you can only remind them about this and not to let them to get them down and continue the bad streak.  play some fun shooting games to take their mind off it.  and maybe find out if there is something on their mind that caused them to be off on the weekend.  maybe something personal happened and they were upset.

if this a reflection of their ability, then work on shooting technique and maybe consider seeing if there is anyone else in the team that can shoot.  there is a lot of pressure on shooters, and some kids dont handle that pressure well.  they can shoot really well without the pressure of a game and defence, but as soon as they are put under pressure then they fall apart.  maybe work on this in a fun way.

i was once told by a friend how he has all the other kids working on an exercise and does some one on one work with each shooter.  he blindfolds them, turns them around a few times so they are disorientated a little, then basically points them at the goal and tells them to visualise the shot first in their head and then take the shot.  kids never got it in, but he tells them it was an amazing shot.  being able to visualise the shot first is important.  and will help build confidence.

also your shooters should be doing daily practise at home.  50-100 shots to be given the position of shooter. practise makes perfect.

hope that helps and that you have a better game this week.

Vannessa it can be quite frustrating when this happens. Remember it is just the beginning of the season, there could be a few reasons, have the goal heights and ball size changed. If it has have the shooters been practising at these heights and with the right ball At 10 have they come from playing a rotational game of netball where positions have changed either the 4 in a game or every week. Sometimes the team just needs a bit of settling in.  I really like Lee-Annes visualisation for shooting.

I coach two teams so rely a lot on the shooters and their parents ensuring the shooters are practicing. I am quite strict on technique and spend a lot of time teaching this however is very difficult to do one on one with 16 girls. The parents have all recieved you tube clips showing right way and have put shooting drills together that I expect the girls to be doing at home or at school.
