Hockey: Sweep far post skill

Carry the ball with confidence and run at goal! Teach your players to switch the ball and feed the lines to get the ball up the pitch!

Get any shot off towards the back post, whether it?s a sweep or a push to put it on a plate for a deflection into the goal.

Player 1 passes the ball into the circle to player 2 or 3, avoiding the defending player, on the edge of the circle, who can only try and intercept the pass.

The receiving players in the circle try and score a goal past the keeper.

The sweep is a variation from the hit pass.

The grip and stance are the same the ball is placed in line with the front foot.

The stick is drawn back a short way and swept forwards along the ground to strike the ball.

Player 1 starts by running with the ball to the right hand cone, keeping the ball in contact with the stick, before passing the ball to the next player (Red Player 1).

When the red number 1 receives the ball they mirror the move coming from either direction.

After the pass the players join the opposite queue.

• Set up with three players in position. One with the ball, two metres from top D. One at top D, five metres to the right. One outside the far left post a couple of metres in from the baseline.
• Player 1 passes to player 2, who in one movement takes the ball in front of them before striking the ball on the floor to the far post
• Player 3 runs towards goal and deflects the ball with the reverse edge of the stick into the goal
• Follow your pass to the next destination.
