Hockey: Sweep Hit

DESCRIPTION

The sweep is a variation from the hit pass.

The grip and stance are the same the ball is placed in line with the front foot.

The stick is drawn back a short way and swept forwards along the ground to strike the ball.

COACHING POINTS

The position of each player's head over the ball

Transfer of weight onto the front foot are important in keeping a low and safe follow through with the stick.

Goal Scoring Opportunities - Sweep to back post

Get any shot off towards the back post, whether it?s a sweep or a push to put it on a plate for a deflection into the goal.

Switching from Back to Attack!

Feed the ball to the wings and launch the attack - Slickly move the ball at speed from defence to offence!

OFTEN USED WITH...

Forehand to Forehand:

Players pass and control ball on stick, forehand to forehand.

Ball is not allowed to bounce off the stick.

Passing & Receiving

Dribble pass relay:

Player 1 starts by running with the ball to the right hand cone, keeping the ball in contact with the stick, before passing the ball to the next player (Red Player 1).

When the red number 1 receives the ball they mirror the move coming from either direction.

After the pass the players join the opposite queue.

Moving with the ball

Sweep far post skill:

Ball is played into the player by the far post who has to sweep the ball into the goal with a smooth, first time shot.

Video Techniques

Pass, Hit, Deflect:

Set up with three players in position. One with the ball, two metres from top D. One at top D, five metres to the right. One outside the far left post a couple of metres in from the baseline.
Player 1 passes to player 2, who in one movement takes the ball in front of them before striking the ball on the floor to the far post
Player 3 runs towards goal and deflects the ball with the reverse edge of the stick into the goal
Follow your pass to the next destination.
