Community | Handling / Hit gaps (chop lines)

IB Teacher, England

DESCRIPTION

This is a handling and line-running drill. The distance between cones can be varied - 3-4m between cones for v quick hands, 5-10 for longer passes and more 'game style' situations. Three start on the cones and take the ball out and back. In both cases, P1 runs straight, P2 and P3 run 'chop' lines, receiving the ball in the channel between the cones. P1 runs straight and passes to P2 in the channel (chopping in). P2 straightens and passes to P3 in the next channel (chopping in). All three players round the far cones and do the same coming back: P3 now runs straight and passes to P2 chopping in who straightens and passes to P1 chopping in. Development: The next group begins when the first group turns at the far end. Simulates pressure by having to think about running lines and hands in traffic.

COACHING POINTS

- Ensure receivers are getting ball in the channels. - Chop lines should straighten as they receive the ball and be ready to give pass straightaway. - Make sure players have hands up & are turning their head and looking as they make the pass. - Timing runs to give depth and allow fluency.
