5 Stump Pentagon Drill

10-18 players required. (Note diagram for accurate lay-out of drill.) Five stumps required for drill. Three stumps are set up on a diagonal line, 10m apart from each other. The other two stumps are 20m away from these, again on a diagonal but this time they are 20m apart. The Coach stands at the top on the middle stump. The drill begins when coach rolls the ball out as shown. Player 1 must sprint around the first stump, change direction and then underarm pick the ball up, aiming to hit the third stump. Player 2 must anticipate the ball coming towards them, and moves forward off the cone to back the ball up. Player 2 then throws overarm at the base of the next stump. Player 3 anticipates this happening, and backs the throw up, before throwing the ball over the top of the final stump. The next player now returns the ball to the coach, and then continues to run around the first stump. Drill continues, and players follow the ball, moving clockwise to the next station.

Front Foot Drive Positioning

Set up two cones half way down the wicket, one central and one leg side. Feed from a bobble feed. Batter to hit from the front foot drive set position, knees and feet facing down the wicket, and aiming for one of the two cones. If the shot is an on drive (towards left cone), batter to hold the shape, and take small steps towards the direction of the shot to the cone. If the shot is a straight drive (middle cone), batter to simply hold the shape.

Game - Front Foot Drive

Set up 3 cones of different colours a third of the way down the wicket.  Bowling machine can be set to vary the line a little. Batsman to face 3 balls and to call the colour out of the cone they are aiming for. Aim of the game to get a shot aimed at each of the 3 colours- 1 point for each correct shot. If they are not successful then back to 0. If player misses swap them out.  If hit the on drive, hold shape all the way to the cone. If a straight drive or off-drive, hold the shape and balance.

Moving out to lofted drive (4-6 groups)

1) drops feeds to 2) who moves out to drive, aiming for the basketball board.3 goes each and then the batsmen becomes the thrower and the thrower joins the back of the queue.In teams, the first group to have 10 hits wins.

Off Spin Throw

Place a few cones in line with the off-stump at both ends of the wicket, going down the pitch. Players get into pairs, roughly about the length of a wicket away from eachother. Players use the off-spin grip to hold the ball. Player throws the ball to their partner and using their wrist and body, they are aiming to spin the ball from the left hand side of the cones to the right - replicating as off-spinners delivery.

Set up two cones half way down the wicket, one central and one leg side. Feed from around the wicket with a bobble feed. Batter to hit from the on drive set position, knees and feet facing down the wicket, and aiming for the two cones.  Back lift over first/second slip, hit a straight line through the ball to the target area. Batter to hold the shape, and take small steps towards the direction of the shot to the cone.

Sweep

Played to a length ball pitching on or around line of the stumps Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. One batter and one feeder minimum required. 6 tennis balls per pair/group. Feeder looks to feed the ball around middle stump, using an underarm 'bobble' feed. Already down on one knee in sweep position, batter looks to play orthodox sweep shot (shot number 1), aiming for the line indicated on diagram.

Played to a ball short of a length and wide of off stump. Ball is aimed square of the wicket. Relaxed, balanced stance, head still, eyes level. Back swing and step back towards off side. Base established, weight stays slightly forward. Shoulders rotate towards offside, horizontally. Bat accelerates, hitting from high to low. Ball contact is made level with head, allow for natural follow through.

Step 1:Batsman starts down on 1 knee in the sweep position with a full backlift.Coach feeds an under arm single bounce throw.Batsman excutes the sweep shot.Step 2:Batsman starts in a half lunge position with the front foot stepping down the pitch.Coach feeds the same delivery.Batsman completes the lunge and executes the sweep shot.Step 3:Batsman starts in their normal stance.Coach feeds the same delivery.Batsman completes the full sweep shot.

Wicketkeeper starts with the ball and rolls out the the fielder in the square leg position.Square leg fielder picks up the ball and aims a throw at the ramp.Fielder at point gets in line with the throw and catches/collects the ball from the throw and then releases a throw at the non-strikers end single stump.Mid-on fielder backs up this throw and gives an underarm throw to the extra cover fielder who has moved im behind the non-strikers end stump.Extra cover completes the drill by throwing the ball back into the wicketkeeper.

Low Catches - Multi Ball Groun...

Drill can work with a mininum of 3 players and 1 feeder.Can add more pairs sharing catches if you have more numbers.Coach/feeder will use the ramp to send 4 consecutive catches to a player opposite.Inbetween that, players will pair up and swap catches whilst the coach is sending the 4 catches.Players rotate once the 4 catches have been taken.

Short Ball Practice Front foot...

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. One batter and one feeder minimum required, with 6 tennis balls per pair/group. Each batter should be wearing a minimum of helmet and gloves on. This drill is designed to improve player's confidence against the short ball. Feeds should range from heights 1,2 and 3, and each batter should have 10 feeds before swapping over. Feeds are from a close range, under arm feed, without bouncing, from a kneeling position. The batter should be encouraged to learn to defend and/or evade at first, gaining confidence and getting them in a better position than before to attack after.

Player 1 rolls the ball out, 2 intercepts and flicks at stump 2. 8 stops the ball and rolls it out towards 3, 5 then intercepts. After each throw, players run up the side and join the back of the queue.<BR><b>Note: </b> The person who starts the practice with the first throw stays where they are until the next turn, then they throw and run up the side.

Cricket: Attacking front foot ...

Player 2 throws. Each batsman has 3 consecutive balls, then goes to the back of the queue. If you leave a ball you get another go. The ball should be a slow high underarm feed.

Prevent Batsman from Backing A...

Batsman to step in to the shot, once the front foot is planted, have the batsman strike the ball with the back foot in the air to prevent them from being able to back away from the ball.

Cover drive Extras - Cricket D...

This is an attacking stroke, played to a full, wide of off stump delivery. Keep a relaxed, balanced stance, with your head and eyes level. Using your normal backswing, step forward; your leading foot should have a comfortable stride to the pitch of the ball. When playing the stroke the front shoulder dips, front knee bends. Your shoulders rotate vertically, bat moves in an arc (3 o'clock to 9 o'clock) and continues  through the line of the ball in the direction of shot (through the covers - on the on-side).

Batter vs 2 handed pick up and...

The drill starts when the batsman calls <em>Yes</em>. At this point the batter must run with the bat in hand and try to complete two runs. However, the batter is racing against the fielders. Fielder 1 rolls the ball out to the player waiting in line who must then use a two handed pick up before returning the ball over the stumps to the wicket-keeper. After the ball is thrown player 1 joins the back of the queue and player 3 takes their place on the cone. After this the race can start again, this time repeated on the other side for the fielding team.

Use of feet To Defend Techniqu...

Looking to defend ball after using feet coming down the wicket Quick feet from the batter are essential when getting to the ball. When advancing down the wicket, batter must aim to keep head as still as possible, and eyes level. Batter needs to be in a still position by the time they make contact, and well balanced. Encourage player to loosen bottom hand upon impact, and maintain their weight into the shot by leaning forward not back. Bat coming through straight s key, with soft hands, with player looking to drop the ball at their feet, making impact underneath their eyes.

12 players per group. One stump placed in the middle of a rectangular shape marked out by cones (20m by 30m). Each cone has same number of players at it.All stations are live every time coach rolls ball out. Coach may roll ball out anywhere they wish.The nearest player at the cone must call for the ball, pick it up, and throw at the stump. The players from the opposite group in the rectangle are responsible for backing the throw up and returning to the coach.If the coach rolls the ball down the middle of the two cones the player must decide who goes for the ball as early as possible, to allow the group backing up to adjust accordingly.Drill continues...

Played to a ball that at the body, usually head high Batter flexes knees, and aims to duck underneath path of ball. Maintaining balance is essential. Batter must look to go back and across stumps Maintain side on position, achieved by encouraging player to keep shoulders parallel. This keeps batter a smaller target Keep weight forward even when moving back and across, to maintain balance and control of the shot Batter must keep eye on ball all the way.
