what drill could i do to improve running into space for netball ?
I have a drill called "numbers". Make 2 even teams. Assign each team member with a number (eg 2 teams of 4 = 1,2,3,4) 1 plays against 1, 2 plays against 2 and so forth. Using only a third Team A must pass the ball in sequential order (1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4) then back to 1. This keeps playing until the defence intercepts the ball. This encourages players to sit back until it is their turn as well as thinking ahead and looking for the space.
You could line the girls up in the middle from one end of the court to the other. Try it with five or six of them evenly spaced first. The person passing the ball at the top of the court calls out go left, go right etc so the first person in the line does what ever she says and runs about a metre and a half to the right for eg and then squares off to come back and receive the ball from where they started in the middle but at the same time the next player in line will leave there spot when the person in front of them starts to square off so that they will also receive the ball on the spot from where they started and this continues all the way down until they master the timing of when they left there spot to received the ball from where they started. You can then add in a defence player who will at first just run beside them and not interfere with the ball until they master that. You can also add another line of players so that you have 2 lines on the court at the same time and they will both do the same thing with 2 passers at the top of each team/line. You can then get them to switch so where they run to there closest side of the court either to there left or right and then they receive the pass at the start position of the other team. Sorry I hope I am explaining it so you can understand. This really helped me to show the girls that timing when they are running into space is everything. There are other drills that you can then do after they have mastered receiving the ball so it looks like a domino effect and they are all moving when they should be.
