i am playing the goal defence position. How do best defend against a 6 f oot goal attack?
hold your ground, stick on her to prevent her entering the circle, so long as your arms are by your sides you can be as close as you like and so if she pushes past you - she`s the one causing contact.
When she`s shooting, be 3ft away with arms up and as soon as the ball is about to leave her hands, jump up for the intercept
Sometimes in this instance I encourage my team to double defending a tall GS (who is most likely being given lobs).
You can get your GD to leave her girl (GA) whilst she is outside the circle, then both GK and GD are on the GS One in front and one behind. This makes it very difficult for them to get a lob in because the pass then has to be perfect. The feeders can also doubt their pass when they see two girls on her so will look for another option. Only thing to look out for is, once the GA comes into the circle, the defeneder that is closest to her has to be ready to pick her up if she looks like she is going to get the pass.
Do you have the taller of the defenders in front or behind the double marked shooter?

in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
