cannot seem to get some players to stand still or not pick up landing feet when they get the ball. Blowing them for stepping normally get them into telling me about all the mistake everyone else is makings
i have a few girls in my team that are new to netball, and so footwork is something we have to work on a lot.
start by showing them what you want to do. that is catch the ball, pivot on one foot and throw the ball.
i then had them all show me what a pivot was. so one foot down and going around squashing the invisible spiders on the ground, or stomping on their brothers toes (or whatever analogy you wish to use...lol)
as an exercise, have the team in 1 line with the players about 2m from each other and have the ball go up and down the line with each person catching then pivoting so they can pass to the next person. once they are doing this correctly, you can split them up into 2 lines and have a race, as that will put them under a little pressure.
now they have the basic catch pivot pass undercontrol, have them all in 1 line facing you, about 10m away, and one by one they run towards the ball, and have them jump and land with both feet down to catch the ball. have them pivot and pass to the person behind them who will pass it back to you and then go to the back of the line. this teaches them to catch the ball with 2 grounded feet so less likely to step. this is the basics.
as for them answering you back with excuses, just cut them short and ask them are they the coach? when they say no, then remind them that. the coach will pickup and correct others technique not them, and that they should only be concerned with their skill learning as obviously they have a lot to learn, which includes not giving the coach excuses.
hope that helps.
Thank you will try that with my next session. Just gets frustrated sometimes.
yes it does.haahahh but then they do something really cool and it makes it worth it. let me know how you go.
Loved your footwork games - made it easier to pick out children myself to help with guided modelling;) As well as those who really have it down pat...
