HiWe have our U16's trials coming up. I haven't coached or selected this age group as yet. What would you look at in ability and skill level for U16's?
Hi Carie,
At this age I would expect the athletes to have mastered the basics and be able to demonstrate a range of skills in both attack and defence. These include:
1) Demonstrate a range of accurate passes used in the correct context - shoulder, chest, overhead and bounce
2) Minimal errors from players - these may include poor passing, footwork, obstructions etc.
3) Players should demonstrate the ability to work within a unit in both attack, reading off each other and defence working together to turn over the ball
4) In attack, players should demonstrate a range of ways to successfully get free with well-timed clear movement
5) In defence, players should be able to dictate their player keeping them high and wide to force an interception
> NOTE: Defensive players can be very successful without gaining interceptions - as long as they are doing their own job and keeping their player out of play
6) Shooters should be able to time their movement correctly to be free for the ball, they should also be shooting at 75% or above
Good luck and I hope this helps - I am sure it will be easy to notice those stand out players who demonstrate these skills and work well together.

in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
