Hi,What can a team of 9 people do to train, with noone to play against? Often there are 7 people at training so we find that we don't have enough people for alot of the drills or because there is an odd number someone gets left out. What are the main things we should work on? We also need some ideas for training people who don't usually play in defensive positions as defenders please!Thank you
half court would be your only choice. one person would have to sit out or if you have only 7 then the C has to play for both sides ie if the attack have the ball then she is there for them, and if the defence has the ball then she will be there for them.
there are heaps of drills you can do with 7. just look at all the drills in here. some you might have to modify to pick up the odd number, but most can be done easily, it might also give you a chance to do some one on one or small group work if you have the others working on passes or intercepts ect.
teaching defence, is all about footwork at first. so any drill where the player is doing crabwalk/side to side steps, change of direction, pushing off the outside leg, shadowing a player who is behind them (so the attacker is facing the back of the defender...this is called in front defence) just teaching them to stick with their player at first is a good start. once they get the hang of it then work on 3ft for defence, rebounding, intercepting and defending the shot.
hope that helps.

I have the same situation with my team. We often play the game "5 passes to shoot" from this pages drills. It is fast paced and really gets them moving, girls love the opportunity for everyone to play the whole court.
in more ways than one
No more 50/50 toss-ups. When simultaneous infringements occur, possession now goes to the team that last had the ball. Here's what it means for your coaching.
Train your defenders to win clean turnovers, not just disrupt. The difference between good defenders and great ones is taking the ball, not just touching it.
