Hi, a netball mum newbie here. I was wondering what the difference is between an intercept and a turnover. It seems to me that an intercept is the same as a turnover (you intercept the ball and "turn over the centre-pass" so to speak). But there must be a distinction because I see the two terms used separately when they show the statistics during the ANZ Championship games. I'd love it if someone could explain it to me. Thanks, Isabella.
Someone correct me if im wrong but I think a turnover is a result of a contact, step, replay etc where the ball is turned over to the other team as a result of a mistake. Where as an intercept is the ball intercepted.
Thanks ladies for your answer. I`d actually asked several friends who`d played netball in their school days and none of them could tell me. This is really helpful. Thanks again :-)
We often yell out `turn it over` when it`s the opositions centre pass, as a means to reclaim the ball and get a goal while on their centre turn. This can be done via whats stated above or being intercepted.
in more ways than one
The early 'shoot from anywhere' era is over. Smart teams now use data-driven decision models to decide when the two-pointer is worth it.
The short pass is being penalised more consistently in 2026. Here's how to train proper passing technique and eliminate hand-offs under pressure.
No more 50/50 toss-ups. When simultaneous infringements occur, possession now goes to the team that last had the ball. Here's what it means for your coaching.
