What's the best practice drills I can implement to help Under 8'slearn to find some space and come forward to the ball thrower.
always a tough one with kids so young as their instincts to all want to ball is high. its a long slow process and one you may not win at this point in time, but maybe play a game of numbers where they have to catch in order of their number, so that only one person is going to the ball at a time and they all know the order of the passes.
as for running to the ball, from what i have seen most little ones dont have a problem running towards the person with the ball, its that the player with the ball is too slow in deciding who to pass it to and so the crowding gets worse. so maybe if you work on getting them to make faster decisions about who they are going to throw it to, then the crowding will be less.
this is a tough group to train, but the rewards are great.
good luck.
in more ways than one
Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
