I am wanting to assess the fitness of the players in my new team, to find a candidate for Centre. I want it to be a game so they don't know What I'm doing. Any suggestions?
run a circuit that they do as a team, that incorporates all sorts of skills, including suicides, burpees, skipping, footwork skills or whatever skills you come up with. whoever is left standing is center.

Just consider that the fittest player might not be your best candidate for Centre though! the Centre needs to be someone who controls the game down the court, with some patience and skill. Too often the Centre tries to take every other pass, for which they do indeed need to be fit, but actually often means you're not moving the ball down the court as quick as you could do.
I agree with Sharon & Lee-ann. Circuit is a great way to test fitness along with full court games with no designated position every player can work the court, some players will gravitate to a cenral role in the game & this will give you an idea of who is thinking ahead too. I have 2 centres one will run all day, the other is a thinker & is perfect when I need them to slow the game down. Keep your options open.
Thanks for the help. Your ideas were great.

Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
