I have been asked to help select college senior and junior teams. I have never done this before so would appreciate ANY advice. I don't think the teams for the trial games have been set up yet. What's the best way to do this?
Normally a game will last about 10mins so you can get a feel for who is taking control of the court and making a difference. If you have an extremely large amount of players could also have a skills session and eliminate players who aren`t developed enough in basic foundations eg. Shoulder passing, shooting technique and footwork, which makes looking at players during the short games a lot quicker!
I`ve found the best way to do selections is to give the players numbers as they register, write it on their registration sheet and get them to write it on their arms and legs, also get them to nominate their 2 preferred positions. Construct teams based on their positions as use their number instead of names. Eg. number 12 is GS. The Selectors panel assesses the players ability as play in their positions either giving them a 1 if they can play the position well or 2 if they can`t. Give players a chance in both their positions. Towards the end of the trial, work out which players have 1`s in both positions and make a game of `possible and probable players`. In this round you can experiment with possible combinations and hopefully make your mind up about which players you will take into the teams. Once you have your team match your numbers up with names. All the trials i have attended have been between 1 and 2 hours long, sometimes taking 2 rounds to make decisions which is perfectly normal just depending on how many players turn up to trial. Hope this helps and is clear enough!
Thank you. How long do you take to assess each player?
