They are such a good team (under 12's), with so much potential, but we struggle against the top 2 teams as their defense is amazing and my girls struggle to get free, which then really disheartens them. I'm a first time coach, so its still a learning experience for me.
there are a number of preliminary moves to teach players in order to get them driving to the ball. most just do the straight line drive and the dodge. but there are the change of pace, sudden change of direction, double dodge, half roll, and full roll to name the most common. if you teach a couple each week, and then do drills or half games where they have to do a premliminary move to get the ball or it is turned over, then it will just give them more options. either look in here or on the net for info on how to correctly coach each of these.
I made up drill cards and made a circuit once i had tought them each one, so they could practise them while i was doing another activity with either the defence or shooters.
hope that helps.
I have a really short WA but she is awesome at forcing the defence forward and then quickly dropping back to take a pass overhead to the space behind her. If you can get them to drive forward to force defence forward and then teach your team to pass back to the space. A good practice is to set up in pairs the full length of the court - You get attacks to pass down line to attacks and get them to drive forward but take the pass back behind them in the space before turning and passing to the next attack. The passer must pass to the space. It is a good one to teach both the pass and the getting free. When it gets to the other end of the court they reverse their positions so have a turn at defending so you are then feeding down the line to the new attacks.
