Hi, I am new to coaching. Can some please explain what open and closed body position means? Thanks
Hi Veronica,
Great to hear you've just taken up coaching! Open and closed body positions are terms that are often used to describe a defenders position.
An open body is probably the most common. It is when the defender is positioned in a way that allows them to see both the player they are marking and the ball. Thus allowing them to adapt to the attack, whether that be pouncing to make an intercept or shadowing the attacking player's movements.
A closed body position involves positioning your body towards the defender and facing away from the ball. This is a more aggressive and confrontational defensive approach that looks to block the attackers movement, shut them out of the game and follow their every move.
Hope this helps.

No more 50/50 toss-ups. When simultaneous infringements occur, possession now goes to the team that last had the ball. Here's what it means for your coaching.
Train your defenders to win clean turnovers, not just disrupt. The difference between good defenders and great ones is taking the ball, not just touching it.
Netball is experiencing unprecedented growth, with record viewership, evolving rules, and professional leagues expanding worldwide. Here's what 2026 brings for our sport.
