How can I teach my players to defend against a very tall goal shooter?
defend them from behind as you will never be able to intercept the shots but you can make them shoot from a distance and hope to get rebounds.
I also teach my ladies to keep moving, sometimes coming off the player abit creates the illusion that the pass is an easy one, meaning that the attackers may not put the height on it making it easier to pick off the pass
the idea is that your defence player blocks/zones them as high up on the circle edge as they can so that they can not get their position for a shot close to the goal. the only way to do this is to position their body behind their player and stop their movement towards the goal as they would have to contact your player to move closer. this causes them to shoot from a distance, and makes it harder to get a rebound. this works a lot easier for the GK as their player is already in the circle. you could sandwich the GS with your GK GD (one in front and one behind) and then when the GA starts to head in, the defender who is in front peels off and blocks the movement of the GA into the circle. again this causes them to feel pressured into shooting from a distance as they cant get their shooters close to the goal as they are being blocked by your defence. (make sense?) obviously if the shooters are at all skilled, there are ways around this, but you asked the question from a defence point of view.
