Looking for ideas or strategies to combat a really quick and accurate GA. Cant let her run the whole court as she will get every second pass and still shoots 90% of the other teams goals. Our defence can only keep up after half time when she starts to tire. We should be able to beat them if we can combat this one very good player.
Hi Nikki,
If your defence cannot keep up I would advise you to try to slow her down, forcing the GA high up court, and wide towards the sideline. For example on the centre pass do not go for the ball, allow the GA to receive the pass high in the centre third and then get your GD to do her 3ft mark and then step in to restrict her space once the GA has released the ball. Your GD should position her body in a wide position to be a big as possible to make it harder for the GA to get around, whilst ensuring she maintains a narrow footbase to be able to keep the GA high and angle her body slightly towards the sideline to dictate where the GA will go.
If your GD loses the GA, advise her to go straight to the top of the circle and keep the GA out as this is exactly where she will go. The GA is a bigger threat inside the circle, especially if she is shooting 90% of the team`s goals. Therefore by keeping her out the circle will reduce this damage and is likely to frustrate the GA and make her force contact on your players, giving you the ball. Your centre court players can also help keep her out of the circle and if the GA pushes a centre court player offside she will get pulled for contact.
However, ensure your players keep their arms in and avoid contact - instead use a small footbase and keep their head up.
Hope this helps.
