Netball: Moving sideways and passing

Deny Space, Make Interceptions, Win Games! use this session to work on the third and final stage of defence!

To be played in groups of 8.

2 defenders stand in each section of the court.

2 attackers work their way down the court passing the ball between them. They must make a given number of passes in each third before progressing to the next third.

Defenders must stay within their own third.

Progression
You could put 3 defenders in each third.

The player without the ball (the worker) drives forwards, taking approximately 5 steps before then rapidly running backwards towards one of the cones.

As they reach the cone the other player should feed a high pass for them to jump up and catch as they are moving backwards.

Repeat 5 times and then swap player's roles.

Players work in groups of 5 - 3 passing players on the outside of the triangle, one attacking player in the middle and one defender who is marking the central player.

The defender has to prevent the attacker from getting free to receive a pass from the outside players.

Players work in pairs over varying distances depending on the pass type.

1. Each pair should stand opposite their partner.
2. Each pair are given a number. The first pair are 5, the following pair are 10 and so on, going up in denominations of 5.
3. Players have to make their allocated amount of passes. Once they have done that they shout 'bump' and swap places with the pair next to them with the higher number. They then start their passing again, but add 5 to their original number. The pair who were 'bumped' have to start again, subtracting 5 from their starting number.
4. The aim is to move up the group and have as high a number as possible. Work for 2-4 minutes, then stop the players to see if they have moved up or down.
