Gary Key Coach, England

DESCRIPTION

Attacking team vs defending team. Always start with/reset to a defenders' 16-yard free hit. Reset whenever a goal is scored, or when the defenders carry/pass over the 1/3-pitch mark (in yellow). Call a team huddle every 2-3 rounds and prompt teams to reflect on their performance (see questions below). Swap the teams over after [10] balls/attempts to outlet. Variations/progressions: To encourage outletting to wing: defenders must carry or pass through wide gates to score Mismatched teams: switch a player over if one side keeps losing Increase attacking team's intensity: 1 bonus pt if you can turnover the ball within 5 seconds Increase defending team's intensity: you must reach the 1/3 line within 20 secs or it's a turnover

COACHING POINTS

The aim is to move ball out of defence to safety ("outlet"). Emphasis should be on defenders reflecting on how to do this. Ensure that off-the-ball players in the defenders' team are moving to space, to create passing options for the free-hit taker. Encourage attacking team to keep it match-like and put pressure on defenders. Feedback/questions: What are you doing well? What can you improve on, or do differently? How do you want to organise when defending / attacking? How can you keep the ball better? How can you win back the ball quicker? Outletting strategies to consider: Get the ball to the wing and keep it there Draw first line of attackers forward to create space, then lead into the space created behind them
