Skill Building (Each Student needs a ball)
Ball Handling
1) Students toss the ball from their left hand to their right using their fingertips
2) Students move ball around their torso in a circle. Those who are having success can increase the speed
3) Students roll ball down their back and quickly move hands behind their back to catch the ball.
4) Students stand with a slight bend in their knees and move the ball between their legs in a figure 8 motion.
Dribbling
Technique: Lean forward and bend your knees slightly, keeping your weight evenly distributed on the front of your feet. Push the ball toward the floor with the fingers and wrist of one hand (NOT PALMS). Wrist and fingers should be relaxed and hand cupped with fingers spread. Keep the ball close to your body. Look forward not at the ball.
1) Dribble with right hand only. Students should bend knees and place their left foot forward. Bend over and bounce ball beside your back leg.
2) Switch and do the same on your left side, (Right foot forward this time)
3) Low Dribble: Bounce ball rapidly below knee level. Try both hands
4) Crossover: Have students dribble the ball across their body using one hand and then the other. Students in need of a challenge can practice bouncing the ball between their legs.
Activities:
Red Light Green Light:
Have the students line up across the baseline and give them commands. First play again is the winner. If a player fails to stop on a command they go back to the beginning.
Green light: Dribble quickly
Yellow light: Walking crossovers
Red Light: Stop in control
Blue light: Left Hand only
Orange Light: Low dribble ball below the knee
Black Light: Dribble backwards (towards the baseline where students began)
Knock Away:
Students continuously dribble around the gym inside the black lines attempting to knock other players balls away with their free hand while maintaining control with their own. Every successful touch of an opponents ball is a point. Players keep track of their points and report out at the end of the round.
(You can finish with a round of elimination where if a player has their ball flicked away they leave the grid)
