COACHING POINTS

Stationary Dribbling


SET-UP: Place pancakes opposite of each other. Each child stands on a pancake with a basketball. 


Non-bouncing movements:


  • - Strength Test (child hold's the ball as strong as they can and the coach tries to whack it out.)
  • - Ball Slaps
  • - Figure 8: With no floor assistance
  • - Clap Catch (then see how many they can do)


DRIBBLING TECHNIQUE - Knee's bent, head up, snap the wrist down.


Bouncing Movements:


  • - Right-hand dribble: Start at hip level then move to Ankle Level.
  • - Left-hand dribble: Start at Hip Level then move to Ankle Level.
  • - Dribbling on one foot then switch
  • - Crossovers (TIP - Keep the ball below the knees when crossing over)
  • Partner clapping - Dribble to the middle, high-five the person opposite you, dribble backwards, repeat. Switch hands.
  • Cone swapping - Dribble, hand the cone to your partner, dribble backwards then repeat


2 ball dribbling Children partner up and both basketballs go to one person. For 1 minute they perform 2 ball dribbling then when the coach says "SWITCH" they give the two basketball for their partner to do the same then. Tip: Dribble the basketballs low. The lower the easier


Once completed, finish with TENNIS BALL catching. How to do it:


Use child as a demonstration:


- Child dribbles the ball with either hand, coach gently underarm and throws a tennis ball on the opposing hand. The player must catch the tennis ball while maintaining the dribble and then throw it back. 

 

Then finish with a moving dribbling race. Assign everyone a number either 1,2 or 3. When there number is called they must dribble race to the other side. Repeat several times, and add variations to keep engaged.
