How can we resolve this problem?

A netball player (Goal Defence) who was the anchor in the team was not recognised as a great team player and now that the season has started and I am the coach for this team, I see the kids would not pass the ball to her and is very indifferent towards her. This is coming from the parents of those kids. This little girl, with her dence skills drove the ball to other side and the team made their first score at interschool netball. She is under my wing now, how do I approach this situation and my response to the mum (ex netball captain) who has taken the time to watch every netball game.

Hi Angel,

I can understand how this would be a difficult situation. Firstly, I would speak to the individual player (GD) and explain to her how she is a very talented player but she needs to work on playing as a team - how netball is a team game and each position is just as important as another. One player cannot with the game, for example, she can get as many interceptions as she likes but if they ball cannot get through court and the shooters cannot score, you will never win the game. Explain ways she can work on this, for example, her communication and interaction with other players, being positive etc.

I would then speak to the whole group and again explain the importance of every individual player within the team. All 7 players on court, as well as the subs off court, are involved in working together to win games and that is the way you want to move forward this season, as a united team. I would then personally simply have a team building session, this is likely to just be fun activities where the players need to work together to solve puzzles or fun races - for example the human knot game where the girls have to work together to un-tie their arms.

Hopefully this should resolve your issue, however if you see the girls are still not passing to this player, in training stop the game and make players accountable. Ask them who their best option was and why they didn`t pass there? If this player (GD) was their best option they wouldn`t have a reason to not pass to her. Continue this to reinforce the importance of using/including all players on court.

Hope this helps.
