Hi I am a student teacher, I am currently doing my placement in a class of 7 and 8 year old. They need to work on defending while the opposite team is trying to shoot. They need to work on keeping their distance in particular. Does anyone have any ideas of activities I can do with my class to help them improve on this skill?
I have used chalk to draw a heap of lines on the court the correct distance. Getting the girls in groups of 3 with one defending using the lines as a guide to defend each pass between the other two will start to give them an idea of the correct distance. Ive also ruled lines in the shooting circle, getting the shooters to stand at one end. It is surprising how quickly they do pick up the 3 feet so it won't take long.
Have them stand on the base or transverse line and 'pitter patter'. On a whistle blow, they are to jump back the required distance and put up their hands, holding for 3 seconds. Have them hold their position and analyse whether they got 3 feet or not. This also helps to get the girls getting their distance before hands up so they don't obstruct the opposition.
The chalk lines etc all sound great then as they get better pair the girls up doing follow the leader on the whistle the first girl turns as if she has just caught a ball, defender gets back 3ft. They can swap on each whistle or so many turns. Good just to throw in warm ups for start of practise.
We do a drill where there are cones all spread over the court. The players run around. When I blow the whistle, the players have to find the nearest cone, stand three feet away and defend it.

Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
