Hi all I am desperately seeking knowledge of court spacing. I am the coach of a team of 11 year olds and I don't have much playing history to speak of. The girls are still at that point where they all seem to lead for the ball and crowd the space around the ball. My problem is that I don't know the theory around who should be leading and who shouldn't be. I want to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of team play myself - who should be hanging back and who should be going for the next pass. I have done the Australian foundation coaching course but it didn't seem to cover this area. I would love to see a video of a coach teaching young players this concept. Does anyone know of any books, blogs, youtube videos that may come in handy? Thanks to all, love reading all the informative questions and answers.
Hi Betty. I have attached a summary of court spacing concepts. Crowding is common in new to netball players and it can take a while for them to understand that not every player needs to get a pass and that calling for a pass when not free or following another player`s poor lead into the same area won`t usually get them the ball. A simple routine to introduce positional play and spacing is: Numbers netball - give every player a number and evenly space them down court. Pass the around ball from one end to the other in sequence for starters then introduce odds, evens, coach calling random numbers. Players to be on toes & moving in small area before making a lead for their pass. Once they have passed the ball they move back to their areas. You can introduce a couple of defenders covering the middle of the court for a bit more challenge.

Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
