Netball: Movement Drill 1

Develop your player's ability to get free from their opponent quickly and effectively to maintain or gain possession of the ball.

A good pass isn?t just made by the passer, the receivers movement must be spot on to create it. Develop your players explosive leads to get free from their marker and receive the pass.

Players take it in turns to run through the defender's areas as pairs. The player without the ball leads into the space. Working together they should try to pass and move, maintaining possession of the ball, from one side to the other.

If players successfully pass and support each other to the other side without losing the ball they pass the ball to the next pair and then join the back of the queue.

If the ball is intercepted though the pair who lost the ball become the defenders and the original defenders take the runner's place at the back of the queue.

Create a square, approximately 3m x 3m as shown by the by the blue cones in the diagram.

Two feeders will stand either side of the square, with an attacker and defender in the middle.

The attack can choose which feeder they wish to offload the ball to.

The practice is continuous - with the attacker working towards a set number of passes or time.

Set up a 3m x 3m area, with an attacker and a defender inside. A feeder stands outside the area and starts with the ball. You can set this up in the context of the court with the feeder starting on the Centre circle and the box being in a shooting third.

The feeder tosses the ball up to themselves to start the drill and turns to face the attacker.

The attacker's aim is to come over the front line to recieve the ball, getting free from the defender.

3 seconds for a pass once drill has begun.

1. One A starts with the ball. She passes to her partner who has made a move to get past a defender.
2. First A then moves, taking on the other defender to receive the ball back from her partner, a 1-2 passing pattern.
3. A then passes to another A at the front of the opposite line to where she started.
4. Defenders mark tightly.
5. Working As line up at the back of the opposite line to where they started.
6. New As repeat.
