Netball: Attackers Providing Options Around the Circle

The purpose of this drill is to encourage Attackers to get into a position near to the transverse line when receiving a Centre pass. Set up 6 cones, beginning with 2 close to the middle and near the transverse line and then 2 more pairs of cones moving out and further away. The nearer cones are worth 3 points and as they get further away this decreases to 2pt and then 1pt. Aim is for the Attacker to get free and move into the centre third ready to receive a Centre pass. Attacker shouls look to shiftt he defender's bodyweight enough to reach the cone without being tagged by the Defender.

Place 3 hula hoops, chalked circles or use intersecting lines on the ground. The player runs to land in the first hoop on 2 feet They then run to land in the second hoop landing on their right foot first, then place their left foot on the ground. The player then runs to the 3rd hoop and lands on their left foot first followed by the right foot.

This is a very simple relay practice with the emphasise on the player running in catching the ball and landing on one foot and then the next. The players are required to say ICE with first foot touching the floor and Cream when the2nd foot hits the ground. then pass and follow the ball to the other side.

Set up: One third space, any number of players, 2 cones for each player.  Player practice "little feet" and body angles by moving in and out of the two cones they have set on the baseline.  Players move their feet in, out , in, out and then drive stright towards the third line and back.   

Half the group have a ball each, the other half has to stand tactically in between the two lines. The players with the balls start behind the line and have to try and get across to the other line by using the static players (middle players can pivot on the spot). 1 or 2 catchers have to try and intercept the balls. Players caught out must either sit out or help catch out the remaining players. See how many of the attacking team can get successfully across to the other side!

2 Feeders and 1 worker. The worker receives the ball from one of the feeders and passes it diagonally to the other feeder. Worker then moves across to receive the ball back from the second feeder. Repeat. It's very important that the worker lands on the outside foot every time she catches the ball to be able to step with the other foot towards her next intended pass.

One ball, half court, 1+ workers, 1 feeder, 4 cones 1. Worker starts at centre circle. Drives straight circle edge.  Drives diagonally out to either left or right, drives straight foward to circle edge, drives straight back drive, square drive to centre court then receives a pass at top of the circle.  2. Bring in defender  

Set up: Full court space, 4 x mini hurdles, 8x short ladders, 10x cones. Players are divided into 2 groups.   Players start at baseline. Two players, from the front of each line begin by jumping over the mini hurdles (set up at right angles to each other). They then run to ladders set up in a cross formation.  Action 1: Forward steps into each square. Action 3: Left turn: Forward steps into each square and backwards to return to the middle.  Action 3: Right turn. Steps in and out of squares both directions to the middle. Action 4: Stright weave with both feet in each square.  Players run towards cones set out in a zig zag formation across the middle third space. Players run from cone to cone in a zig zag direction. The focus is on taking off the outside foot.  Players sprint to the end baseline then turn and sprint back to where they came from.   

Red player 1 passes the ball to Blue player 1, and then runs forward to receive a return pass from Blue player 1. Red player 1 passes to Blue player 2, receives return pass and then passes the ball to Red player 2, and joins line behind Red player 2.

Split your players into 2 teams of 5. Teams play inside the coned area. The first team to complete 10 consecutive passes scores a point. Number of players and size of playing area can be varied depending on age and ability of your players.

In this exercise you have two feeders and then three attackers against two defenders. The first feeder (player x) starts the drill with a pass to white player 1. White player 1 has to pivot and then try and pick out the unmarked player. The defenders have to pick up one white player each and make the interception if the ball is passed to the player they've picked up.

In this relay the player running out to catch the ball turns in the air to land on the back foot and pass the ball back to the line of players they have ran from with the next step.

A feeder, 2 attackers (A1, A2) and 2 defenders set up as shown in diagram. A1 moves forward round the circle edge, away from A2. At the same time A2 starts with the ball, gives it to the feeder and then runs into a space away from A1, as close to the circle edge as they can get. Feeder then has the option to pass to either of the attackers. Attacker's aim is to receive the ball on the circle edge. You can then play free flow of the ball with the same aim

Players get into pairs. 1 of the pair will be a rabbit and the other will be a rat. Rats and rabbits will line up next to each other, facing their partner about 1 meter apart. Coach will either call rats or rabbits. If coach calls rats, they will turn and run to the baseline before the rabbit can touch them. Same for the rabbits if rabbit is called. Progression: If the coach calls rats, the rats try to get around their rabbit partner and to the opposite baseline and vice versa. The defending player is using their body to restrict the attackers movement.  

In a designated area, using lines or cones, the white team must attempt to dodge past each defending player. Defending players can only use sideways movements in order to prevent this.

WA starts wide drawing the WD with her. GA also starts wide. The GA drives should time their run in court to receive the ball. The WA drives in court to receive the pass from the C who then runs up court to receive the return pass. The C then catches the ball and plays to the GA who has made the run to the other side to lose their marker and then passes to the GS to complete the move. C - WA - C - GA - GS

Designed to work your players hard - working on their cardiovascular endurance and their plyometric strength Heel Flicks: Kick your heels up to your bum. Moving at 60% pace. Side-steps: Face the base line from where you started. Players should side-step across, making sure they do not let their feet touch. Moving at 50% pace. Star Jumps: Explosive jumps, with wide arms and legs. Raised Knees: Jog across diagonally, raising knees to a 90 degree angle (can hold out hands to provide a target height). Moving at 60% pace. Side-steps: Same again, this time facing the other direction. Moving at 50% pace. Power Jumps: Starting from a crouched position players must jump up, with arms raised above their head. Twisties: Rotate upper body from one side to the other with your arms while running diagonally across the area. Moving at 40% pace. Sprint back: Players run back to the start line at 100% speed.

4 players or more. 1 ball. Blue 1 drives forward to receive the ball from White 1. Blue 1 lands, turns and feeds to Blue 2, before returning to the back of the blue line. Blue 2 feeds to White 1 driving on to the ball.

Pair your players up, with 1 ball per pair. The player that is the worker receives 3 passes to the left over an increasing distance, then repeat with 3 passes to the right (worker runs back to centre each time.) Encourage the worker to try to land on their outside foot.

Set up as shown in diagram. Two attackers, one defender. Attackers drive in different directions and the feeder has to pass the ball to the attacker who the defender chooses to mark. Split lead: start staggered, front attacker leads. One attacker should wait for the other to move first and then move into the other space so that both attackers don't end up going the same way. Attackers drive out in separate directions and the defender chooses one to mark Once the first attacker has received the ball, the other attacker then cuts back ready to receive the next pass. If the defender fails at the first intercept they should drop back to the 3ft mark ready to attempt an intercept on the 2nd pass.
