Teach players to stop with balance and control, land on two feet simultaneously, protect the ball, and execute correct pivots. This is a foundational footwork skill for minibasket. Players start in a line, each with a ball (or 1 ball for every 2â3 players depending on the group). On the coachâs signal, the player dribbles forward with strong and controlled dribbles (2â4 dribbles is enough for younger players). At a designated point (cone, line, or coachâs whistle), the player performs a Jump Stop: Both feet leave the floor at the same time. Both feet land simultaneously, shoulderâwidth apart. Knees bent, hips low, body balanced. Eyes up; ball protected. After landing, the player performs a pivot: Choose the pivot foot (right or left). Use either front pivot or reverse pivot. Keep the pivot foot glued to the floor â no sliding. Stay low and stable during the pivot. After pivoting, the player may: Pass back to a teammate or to the next in line. Take a controlled shot (optional, if you want to integrate finishing). Repeat the sequence on the opposite pivot foot.
Balance first, speed second â the Jump Stop must be clean and stable. Land softly, with knees bent and weight evenly distributed. Keep the ball close to the body and protected from defenders. Eyes up after the stop â ready to pass, shoot, or attack. Teach both rightâfoot and leftâfoot pivots for symmetry. Reinforce correct footwork: Pivot foot stays still The other foot steps in smooth arcs, not big jumps Encourage players to stay low throughout the movement â âlow to go.â Source: Breakthrough Basketball â 72 Drills
