1V1, 2V2, 3V3

I really appreciate the Hockey Coaching on Sportplan. The senior girls...

DESCRIPTION

Phase 1: The 1v1

  • The coach rolls a ball into the center space and blows the whistle.
  • The first Red attacker and the first Orange defender sprint up their respective cone lines, loop around the top cone, and enter the pitch to contest the ball.
  • They play a fast 1v1 duel. Red tries to score in the big goal; Orange tries to win the ball and pass it back to the coach.

Phase 2: Building to 2v2

  • After a few seconds (or a shot/turnover), the coach feeds a new ball into the pitch and blows the whistle.
  • The next Red attacker and Orange defender instantly sprint up their tracks, loop around the top cone, and join the game.
  • The game immediately transforms into a 2v2 match.

Phase 3: The Final 3v3

  • Finally, the coach feeds a third ball and blows the whistle.
  • The third pair sprints around the top cones and enters the pitch.
  • They play out a full 3v3 situation until a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play. Then, the pitch clears, and the next round starts from Phase 1.

COACHING POINTS

For the Defenders:

  • Sprint and Break: Sprint at full speed around the top cone, but slow down and lower your feet right before you reach the attacker. Do not rush in flat-footed.
  • Initiate the Jab (1v1): The first defender must step with their left foot forward, keep stick-distance, and use the jab to delay the attacker's path to the goal.
  • Adapt and Communicate (2v2 & 3v3): As new players enter, defenders must quickly shout who is taking the ball ("I've got ball!") and who is dropping back to provide cover.
  • protect the center: push attackers to the outside

For the Attackers

  • Stretch the Defense (2v2 & 3v3): Do not run toward your own teammate. As the game grows to 2v2 and 3v3, the off-the-ball attackers must run wide to the flanks to stretch the defensive line and open up passing lanes.
  • First-Touch Intent: Look to receive the coach's ball with a positive, forward first touch toward the circle.
  • Search the 2V1: try to create 2V1 situations
