Match with Quartered Pitch

DESCRIPTION

  • Small-sided match i.e. 4v4.
  • Split the pitch into 4, with 1-2 players from each team in each quadrant.
  • They must stay in their quadrant.
  • The opposing players in each quadrant should be of similar ability.

Variations:

  • [easier] No tackling, interception only.
  • Rotate the players' positions occasionally
  • Eliminate the quadrants rule for one or both teams.

COACHING POINTS

This activity is aimed at beginner Under-10s.

Questions:

  • When your team had to stay in their own boxes and the other team didn't, did that make it easier or harder for your team to win? Why?
  • Why is remembering your position and keeping the team's shape (i.e. square/triangle) important? (i.e. to prevent bunching + following the ball, to find space for receiving a pass)
