Attacking Soft Targets

Create 5 x 5 yard squares in corners of the grid. Play 4 v 4.The red team has possession of the ball. The object of the game is to play the ball into one of the two attacking boxes for a player to run into and control the ball with the sole of the foot. The play is conditioned to encourage one touch passing and switching play. The red team is attacking to the right side of the diagram.

Crossing from Channel Players

1) Only wide players allowed in channel. 2) A goal must come from a cross or direct result of a crossed ball. 3) Compete 5 v 5 in middle and limit to 2 touches. Wide players have unlimited touches. 4) Condition game and coach what you see.

Movement before the pass - 1 vs 1

Red player 1 stands on the red cone closest to the blue player. When red 1 is ready they should run and tag red player 2. Red player 2 can try to win the ball once tagged. The blue player then plays the ball towards red player 1 who receives the ball on the move. Red 1 can choose to lay the ball back to Blue 1 or turn and try to score a goal by passing or running the ball through the goal where red 2 started.

1 v 1 skills

Overlap to Attack!

Play across half a pitch. Each team must have 3 defenders and two centre forwards. Players must follow their own passes forward, with the intention of overlapping to receive the return pass.

Toe Taps Level 2

Players with a ball each. They work on touching the ball with the bottom of their toes, alternating the feet. The ball should remain in and around a 1 yard radius.

Triangle Conditioning - Chest & Pass

Set up a triangle as shown. 3 players on the outside have a ball each and the player in the middle without a ball. Player in the middle receives a serve from one player on the outside and controls with the chest before volleying it back to them using the interior or the laces of their feet. He then leaves the vicinity of the triangle before coming back and and receiving from another player.

Set up a triangle as shown. 3 players on the outside have a ball each and the player in the middle without a ball. Player in the middle receives a serve from one player on the outside and heads it up in the air, and then heads it up back to them. He/she then leaves the vicinity of the triangle before coming back and and receiving from another player.

Suicides - Speed Endurance Agi...

Set up to the side, using the pitch markings as an indicator of where to place your cones (on the touchline, in line with the 6 yard box, penalty spot and baseline).On hearing your whistle players sprint as fast as they can to the first line and touch the ground with their hand before quickly changing direction and running back to the touchline.Repeat to the next line.Finish the suicide by running as fast as you can to the furthest cone, touch the line and run back to your original starting point.

Red 1 passes the ball to one of the teams to start the game. There should be 3 players in both wings and 8 players in the centre of the pitch. The wing players cannot be tackled and the central players are not allowed into the wing areas. In order to score a goal the team in possession must make 5 consecutive passes before passing out to their wide man. The wide players must both touch the ball before it is crossed in for the team in possession to attack it, with the other team defending the cross. After an attack on goal has been made the ball returns to red 1 who feeds the ball out to the other team.

Place 5 cones across the middle of the area, 10 yards in from each sideline. Play 4 vs 4. The ball is not allowed to travel through or over the discs. The object of the game is to get the ball wide in the near side of the field and attack the flanks of the attacking area. Although the ball is not allowed to travel over the discs, players may make runs over the discs.

Four Goal Football Conditioned...

Play small sided game in a suitable area (e.g half field 6v6). Two teams attempt to score in any of the goals. A goal counts if the ball is passed through the goals and one of your teammates receives the pass round the otherside of the goal. The game is continued so it does not stop after every goal.

Team stay in own half, except for 2 players from each team who are put in the other section. Each team shoots at earliest opportunity. Start the game with one ball and build it up to a number of balls. The two players in the opposite half score from rebounds or interceptions.

Breakaway Conditioned games - ...

Set out three grids within the area according to the dimensions shown in the above diagram. Play 3 v 3 in the 30 x 40 yard grid.The team in possession plays the ball around the central area. The goal of the game is to penetrate into the attacking area and finish a 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper must stay on the line until the attacker crosses the attacking line.Progression: Allow a single defender to pursue the attacker to pressure or block the shot.

Overloading Conditioned games ...

The pitch set up has a defending zone and an attacking zone, divided by a midfield channel. The defending zone and attacking zone have 2 defenders and 2 attackers in each zone. The midfield channel has 2 neutral (no.10) players inside. The defenders receive the ball from the goalkeeper and play through to one of the neutral midfield players (with the attacking players trying to stop this). The neutral players then play into the attacking players and join the attacking zone to create a 3v2 overload. Try to score in the opposition goal. Progression 1: Neutral players are split iinto one player for each team (i.e. one becomes blue, one red). These players are unnoposed to begin with in the central channel (but this makes only one midfield player to play into from the defensive zone).Progression 2: Central zone players become opposed (i.e. the opposition midfield player can intercetpt etc). The ball can be set back from the midfield players into the defensive players to play through into the attacking zone. Progression 3: The midfield players can drop into the defensive zone to make a 3v2 overload.

Communication Drill Passing an...

Set up your team in a small sided game on a pitch running from the edge of the penalty area to the half-way line.Play normal rules except for the fact that during the drill, players are not allowed to talk during the game. Players cannot call for the ball, tell a player where to go or where they want the ball passed to. This really emphasises the importance of communication. If a player does speak, then a free-kick is given to the opposite team.

Objective: To change the direction of attack by turning in a small sided game.Detail:Half pitch practice with 4 goals (as shown in diagram).Split the group into 2 teams of 8 with no GK's.Play 8 v 8 with each team attacking and defending 2 goals.Emphasis on changing the direction of attack my turning towards another goal.

5 vs 5 game (can be played with or without goals).Game 1:Possession keeping game where all passing is with the hands by throwing and catching. Teams score a point for every 10 passes they make without losing the ball.Game 2:Alternatively you can play this game with goals. All passes must be made with the hands (players can't run with the ball in hand) and players can only score with a header.
